I remember fear as a reflection in my eyes

When glancing not straight but just to the side

Lurking as it did ready always to strike

Allowing no rest leaving nowhere to hide

Though never gone its appearance has changed

Less of the violence that haunted those days

Subtle in its demeanour while plying its trade

But happy to remind you that in your soul it stays

A life without fear is one lacking risk

Missing essential feelings that give breath to bliss

When it is changed from control to controlled

Fear moves us on and releases its hold
